A customer contacted me after the electrician carrying out the first fix of his new garden room electrics stopped responding, leaving him with unfinished wiring and no clear way forward.
He asked me to inspect the existing work, address any faults and complete the installation so he could start using the space.

Checking the Existing Garden Room Wiring
Taking over another electrician’s unfinished installation starts with establishing what is already there. Before connecting anything to the supply, I needed to check the condition of the wiring and confirm that it was suitable to use.
My initial inspection and testing included:
- Checking earth continuity throughout the installation.
- Carrying out insulation resistance testing.
- Inspecting the accessible cables for damage.
- Checking connections and the wiring at accessory positions.
These checks identified several issues that needed attention before the installation could be completed safely.
Replacing the Unsuitable Consumer Unit Arrangement
One of the main concerns was an existing switch-fuse enclosure that had been adapted for use as a consumer unit. The arrangement included poor neutral connections, creating a potential safety risk.
I replaced this with a suitable consumer unit incorporating RCD protection. I also properly terminated and glanded the steel-wire armoured supply cable, ensuring the protective earth connections continued through the installation.
This addressed the concerns with the original arrangement and provided a sound basis for completing the remaining work.

Completing the Sockets, Lighting and Heating Controls
With the supply arrangements corrected and the existing wiring checked, I moved on to fitting and connecting the garden room’s sockets, switches and lighting.

The lighting wiring followed an unconventional layout, with several connections brought together in a junction box. Although a different arrangement would have been my preference for neatness and ease of future maintenance, an unconventional layout does not automatically mean a complete rewire is necessary.
I checked the existing arrangement, corrected and re-terminated the connections where needed, and left them as neat and organised as the existing wiring allowed.

The completed work included:
- Internal sockets and switches.
- Internal lighting.
- Exterior lighting.
- An outdoor socket.
- Underfloor heating controls.

Tested, Certified and Ready to Use
Over two days, I completed the outstanding electrical work, addressed the issues identified during my inspection, and carried out final testing and certification.
The customer was delighted to have the garden room electrics finished after being left unsure how to move the project forward.

A further visit is planned to install garden bollard lights once the customer has chosen the fittings. The garden room installation itself is complete, with the additional garden lighting to follow.
